Last week we had the pleasure of attending a private brunch to celebrate Toyota’s new “Home Team” campaign at the legendary Apollo Theater. Now this venue was the perfect place to debut the new commercial for the Toyota Highlander which honors the ground breaking Negro League as they celebrate 100 years. The new commercial features former Kansas City Monarchs Captain James “Jim” Robinson who was also in attendance for the special event. The intimate room filled with journalist & community activist were delighted to be in the presence of a sports legend who has inspired generations of athletes.

Toyota put together a special panel of men to discuss the special commercial which included ESPN/ABC correspondent Ryan Smith , vice president and creative director of Burrell Communications Group Corey Seaton & executive program manager, product development office of Toyota Motor North America Craig Payne. What I truly admired about this panel was that 3 black men who work in different areas were able to express how Jim & the Negro League inspired them . It was a beautiful site to see how their love of the game and the people who paved the way for them has helped them all to become a force in their respective fields. This lineup alone is the reason why we have to continue to learn about our Black History and not just for month , because what these men are doing are paving the way for the next generation of men to take things to the next level.

I had a chance to ask the baseball legend how did it feel to be apart of their new campaign and if he knew what he was doing decades ago would be such an important part of history. “I Loved all of it , especially being in the Highlander. I need one of those” joked the 90 year old. He also stated “We never thought about making history , we just wanted to play and we took care of each other even the bus driver. We were all apart of the team”. The spirit in the building was all about giving back & paying homage and Toyota did that in more ways then one. Before the panel was over Toyota’s own Joe Moses (General Manager over Vehicle Marketing and Communications)presented their donation of $25,000 to the Harlem Little League to help fund field repairs, coaching clinics and team uniforms. Now if that wasn’t enough , we were then able to watch the commercial as Jim shined on screen which was the perfect way to celebrate Black History Month. Now although the highly anticipated commercial doesn’t run till March 30th , you check out a behind the scenes feature on the monumental campaign below.

Last week we had the pleasure of coming out to the Public Theater for the first time to catch the play ‘Aint No Mo’ which everyone has been raving about. We first head of the show a month earlier after a friend of ours actor Khalil Kain spoke so highly of the show, so instantly i had to see what it was all about. The playwright Jordan E Cooper has truly put together a masterpiece that is like no other and to top of it, he also stars in the show as well. Now although i didn’t know exactly what to expect from the show , walking into the theater at LuEsther Hall was clearly going to be an experience i would never forget. The show which also starred an ensemble cast started out with a bang as a minster & his congregation mourned the loss of a loved one while celebrated the arrival of a new president Barack Obama. Within minutes of the show the audience was taken on a roller coaster of emotions as the room turned into a comical yet inspirational church service that had the audience engaged in every way like we were truly in our home church. But things quickly took a turn for the worse as the show jumped years ahead dealing with the toxic reality of the current president Trump in office.

What we experienced next was truly a sad look into what could be the future for many of us as an African American in a country where we may never feel like we truly belong. What Jordan and the shows director Stevie Walker-Webb brought to light was something that needed to be seen as many live in fear of what may possibly come in the near future. The play which is a satire in many ways finds comedy through the reality of darkness where some cant seem to find any light. Jordan touches on many different aspects of life when it comes to being black in America in this play from finding acceptance as a member of the LGBT community , black lives matter , abortion , reality tv stereotypes , prison & more. With the theme of returning to Africa for a better way of life throughout the show , one would think that this could actually be a possibility due to today’s social and political climate but what Jordan does with this show is exactly what is needed to have to start a real conversation.

The stellar performances from Jordan and his cast mates Marchánt Davis,Fedna Jacquet
, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Ebony Marshall-Oliver & Simone Recasner
will leave you breathless and wanting more and from the looks out of it , it seems like we just might get exactly what were waiting for. If you haven’t seen this play yet , please do yourself a favor and see this incredible show before it closes on May 5th as tickets can be purchased HERE. This must see show is so powerful and deserves to be seen in every way possible and with the help of its producer Lee Daniels we can only imagine whats next to come for this masterpiece. Hopefully the show will make it’s way to the big stage on Broadway or in the form of a film but one thing we know for sure is that Jordan E Cooper’s work of art is something to be treasured. Check out our exclusive interview with the rising star as he opens up about his journey from Texas and why he is one to watch below.
